Analysing sources
Some general issues:
- Different types of sources present different issues regarding usefulness and reliability.
- In HSC questions you will always be asked to comment on usefulness and reliability as they relate to specific aspects of the topic. Year 11 and 12 questions always say “discusss/analyse the usefulness of sources X and Y for a historian studying (Eg.) life in the city of Tsarist Russia or (Eg.) conditions in the trenches.
- Always read the whole question.
- When answering a question ensure that you refer specifically to the sources mentioned Eg. ‘as source A says…’ or ‘… (source A)
